Job Description:
The Director of Firmwide Security is responsible for establishing and maintaining a Firmwide physical security program that ensures that people, property and assets are adequately protected and that complies with applicable laws and regulations. This position is responsible for identifying, evaluating and reporting on security risks. This position requires a forward-looking, self-starting person with strong skills in security, technology and business management. The Director proactively works with senior management and various offices and departments of the Firm to implement practices that meet defined policies and standards for security and oversees all physical security activities.
The Director will work with Firm senior management to identify and develop strategies for mitigating risk to the Firm. The Director should be knowledgeable about the legal office environment and will work to maintain all office facilities in a fully functional, secure mode. Because the Firm has offices in a number of countries around the world, the Director must be knowledgeable about the different types of risks encountered in those countries, the applicable laws and regulations in those locations, be sensitive to the different cultures in which the Firm operates and develop programs to mitigate those risks within the various cultures.
As appropriate, the Director will coordinate with law enforcement authorities in the various countries in which the Firm operates and with peers at other international law firms and will retain and oversee external resources involved in the security program.
The Director is expected to reside in the metropolitan area of one of the Firm’s major East Coast offices (New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. or Pittsburgh) and will maintain an office in that location.
Essential Functions
Develop, implement and monitor a strategic, comprehensive enterprise security risk management program.
Develop and communicate organization security policies, programs and standards and ensure their compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Work cooperatively with the Firm’s Chief Information Officer with respect to information security to meet the technology security needs both of the Firm and its clients.
Work cooperatively with the Chief of Office Services with respect to disaster management and office security.
Coordinate the appropriate level of security for various Firm-related events on and off site.
Develop and maintain communication channels with local, state, national and international law enforcement authorities and with peers at other international law firms.
Investigate and, together with Firm senior management, be responsible for security incidents and similar events such as workplace violence, travel security and internal fraud.
Coordinate the use of external resources involved in the security program.
Work to develop business-relevant metrics to measure the efficiency and effectiveness of the security program.
Visit periodically the various Firm offices worldwide so as to understand the security needs of each.
Coordinate with senior management the development and updating of business continuity strategies to ensure effective responses to security related crises.
Develop processes for responding to medical emergencies.
Conduct or assist in conducting security-related investigations.
Establish and lead cross-functional teams to react to special concerns or events in cities where we do business.
Over time and in response to the Firm’s needs, develop a physical Security Department, manage that Department, develop and manage the security budget and develop appropriate awareness training programs.
Requirements
Education:
Minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, Organizational Security, Information Systems Security or related field, Additional professional certifications or training in the following areas preferred: global studies, security management, strategic security, personal protection, CPR, first aid, etc.
Experience:
10+ years in the security field with substantial experience dealing with various types of security matters that may arise in an international law firm setting. Experience in a professional services environment considered a plus.
Skills:
The necessary self-confidence to interact comfortably and cooperatively with members of the Firm’s senior management.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
High level of personal integrity and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters professionally and with discretion.
The ability to work as a member of a team, constructive influencing skills and good judgment.
The ability to remain calm in high pressure situations, react with common sense solutions to difficult circumstances and anticipate multiple outcomes to complex situations.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Over time, as the Security Department grows and evolves, the Director will be responsible for all aspects of the Department.
Equipment to be Used:
Typical office equipment such as personal computer, mobile devices such as I-Pads and Smart phones and other typical law office equipment.
Typical Physical Demands:
Because of the nature of the job and its potential physical demands, the Director needs to be and remain in good physical condition.
Must be able to work hours in excess of 40 in a work week and be available 24/7 for notifications regarding security issues across various time zones.
Typical Mental Demands:
Needs to be able to deal with stress associated with a fast paced work environment and potentially very challenging situations.
Must be able to deal with multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
Needs to be able to communicate effectively with people of various personalities at all levels of the Firm.
Working Conditions:
All of the Firm’s offices are typical office settings although the nature of this position may require the Director to perform services outside the office. Must be able to travel to any and all cities and countries in which the Firm has offices or where Firm personnel may be assigned to work.
