Position Description The ideal candidate will be responsible for the oversight of a comprehensive security plan for the NBA, WNBA and D-League. S/he will create metrics to measure the effectiveness of the security program and implement a system to track and report physical and cyber security issues, and make recommendations for improvements. The individual will be responsible for risk assessment, crisis management and emergency preparedness for NBA properties and events, aimed at maintaining a safe environment and the continuing operation of the company. The individual will also serve as a back-up for the facility Vice President as needed.


  • Develop and institute plans that will evaluate, track and provide for quick response to external security threats
  • Oversee the execution of the NBA’s security risk and crisis management strategy, including the completion of security assessments of arenas and other facilities with the ultimate goal of minimizing security risks
  • Responsible for Player safety and security across all NBA/WNBA/D-League venues and during all NBA/WNBA/D-League functions
  • Ensure that the NBA’s security operations remain ‘best in class’ across industry while consistently evolving with the global business needs of the League
  • Interact with Local and Federal Government Agencies (Homeland Security, FBI and other task forces) on security threats while continuously messaging Teams with status updates
  • Oversee investigations and at times work with SVP, Chief Security Officerto conduct and manage special investigations and communicate results and suggest solutions and options
  • Manage all security planning, contingency planning, and logistics for League-wide events such as All-Star and Olympics
  • Keep abreast of the latest technology for access screening and other threat protection advancements for use at NBA Games and Events
  • Flexibility to travel as needed (both scheduled as well as unplanned escalations)

  • Minimum of 15 years experience in a security related field with 10 years experience in an investigatory or supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated career attributes in leading security operations in an analogous business; previous experience with a major Law Enforcement Agency and/or skills in Private Sector Corporate Security settings
  • Broad exposure to security industry direction and development
  • Crisis management skills – Existing relationships with Law Enforcement including Regulatory/Government Agencies as well as International Networks
  • Must be an articulate and persuasive leader who can serve as an effective member of the senior management team and who is able to communicate security-related concepts to a broad range of constituents
  • Know-how of managing budgets, P&L and Security IT related programs and systems
  • Deep comprehension of working collaboratively across multiple constituents, lines of business and functions
  • Experience providing counsel to senior leadership and working in stressful situations while maintaining tact, diplomacy and strength of character
  • A history of developing and executing security plans that involve large public assembly and industry/events
  • Active memberships in security organizations, nationally and internationally
  • Recognized as a leading security expert by the security community
  • Incisive, analytical thinker with the ability to grasp complex subject matter quickly with challenging assumptions
  • Strong project management skills and demonstrated expertise in managing projects on a global basis
  • Ability to multi-task while keeping keen attention to detail
  • Superior communication and presentation skills and a vigorous work ethic are necessary
  • Individual must have experience supervising and managing a team.
  • Candidate must have strong skills utilizing Microsoft Word and Excel.
Educational Background Required
Bachelors degree from an accredited university required. 
Masters degree preferred.
