Security Operations Specialist-1

Purpose 
The Security Operations Specialist-1 oversees personnel engaged in carrying out protection of the physical environment of the Genentech South San Francisco Campus and select remote site locations. The position oversees the performance of the contract security force and day-to-day shift operations, both in the field and the control room environment.

The Security Operations Specialist-1 will also support executive protection and investigative functions on an as needed basis. The Specialist will normally perform these functions under the supervision of the respective program manager(s), but will also be expected to act without such supervision when operational needs require it.

As necessary, the Security Operations Specialist-1 provides emergency response services with the mission of protecting personnel, meeting regulatory requirements and speeding the recovery of business operations due to fire, medical, hazardous material other safety related emergencies including large scale disasters.


General Responsibilities
Reports to the Security Operations Specialist-2 as a proprietary non-exempt position
Performs duties as assigned, primarily under the immediate supervision of the Security Operations Specialist-2, but will also act independently when there is not a Specialist-2 on duty
During emergency responses may be called upon to make independent decisions impacting enterprise wide operations.
Performs all duties in accordance with defined policies, procedures, regulations and laws
When presented with scenarios for which there are no predefined procedures, will take the initiative in identifying and analyzing the scenario, considering alternatives and selecting the most appropriate option using good judgment in accordance with company policies and ethical standards
Effectively communicates Genentech security policy to a diverse group of individuals using a variety of communication mediums including written reports, emails, presentations, briefings and other business communications
Represents the security department in organization meetings
Responds to, performs, manages and follows-up on security service related requests; emphasizing excellent customer service at all times
Is familiar with and if necessary will perform all the duties of the staff they oversee
Ensures there is always a proprietary security staff member on duty at all times, flexing work schedule and providing additional coverage as needed to meet this requirement
Oversees task related security projects as assigned and recommends, coordinates acquisition, and oversees installation or replacement of security devices and equipment
Maintains current knowledge of, and ensures facility compliance with, all applicable security regulations
Monitors threats, analyzes incident reports, and implements corrective actions, controls, procedures, and countermeasures as necessary
Coordinates with local law enforcement, emergency response agencies, business groups, contractors, and other outside groups and agencies as necessary to enhance facility protection and improve department efficiency
Ensures operational readiness of security equipment, maintains accountability and ensures proper issuance of such equipment, makes assessment of security equipment needs, and may recommend or assist in the selection of security equipment


Operational Responsibilities
Oversees performance of contract security staff involved in the protection of personnel, property, assets and business operations against all illegal and unauthorized activity
Works with guard vendor’s leadership team to identify and resolve performance related issues related to the contract security staff
Provides support and instruction to security staff in carrying out the security policies and procedures of the organization
Directs security responses regarding incidents and emergencies that fall within the scope of assigned job duties or as warranted by the circumstances
Ensures adherence of personnel to security department procedures and makes recommendations for policies and procedures to enhance detection and prevention of unauthorized activity and improve departmental functioning

Control Room Responsibilities
Provides support and instruction to control room operations staff in the initiation and coordination of engineering, security, fire, or police department response upon detection of unauthorized, suspicious, or problem activity
Oversees monitoring and assessment of electronic systems such as fire detection, electronic access control, closed circuit television, alarm systems and other building systems to deter and protect against all illegal and unauthorized activities
Coordinates dispatch and communications, emergency response, incident management, and organization wide notifications for select incidents
Oversees handling of calls received by the security department’s emergency and general service lines
Monitors and ensures the integrity of data recordkeeping, reports, call logs, and other information collected and maintained by control room operations systems and staff

Investigative Responsibilities
As assigned, conducts records, data, and surveillance video review and analysis
Collects statements and assists with interviews of suspects, witnesses, victims and others in the gathering of case-related information
Reviews officer incident reports documenting the initial details of the investigation and when necessary writes incident reports for significant investigations
Makes recommendations for investigation activities required for the completion of workplace investigations
Documents, stores, and maintains evidence according to established procedures
Liaisons with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as needed.
Testifies or presents in various settings to relate findings of investigations
Identifies significant issues and control weaknesses and recommends organization policy and procedures to minimize exposure or loss


Executive Protection Responsibilities
Carries out personal protection assignments as directed in accordance with defined policies and procedures. Duties of assignments may include providing physical security escorts, driver services, medical assistance, risk assessment, and other duties as assigned
As assigned, performs advance work, security assessments, and inspections of facilities, event locations, ground and air transportation, homes, and other off-site locations
As assigned, coordinates with local security, law enforcement, or others to assess the safety of the areas prior to the arrival of protectees
Helps to identify threats to individuals and coordinates with the senior security leadership to take necessary countermeasures to ensure safety of principal personnel
Performs other security duties as assigned by senior security leadership necessary for ensuring the safety of protectees, which may include admitting vendors; welcoming guests; monitoring closed-circuit surveillance cameras, listening devices, and intrusion detection devices; and utilizing and operating other security equipment and devices as appropriate
Travels, both domestic and international, as necessary to perform job responsibilities.
Participates in high risk or complex personnel protection details within the scope of training

Emergency Response Responsibilities
Maintains active and continual membership on Genentech’s emergency response team
Provides emergency response services as necessary in accordance with defined policies and procedures. Such services may include, but are not limited to; medical, fire, hazardous materials, and confined space rescue
Provides basic search and rescue services as necessary and within the scope of training during large scale disasters (e.g., earthquakes or tsunamis)
As necessary assumes the role of Incident Commander and directs emergency responses
Liaisons with local, state, and federal emergency response agencies as needed as well as authorized contract emergency response services

Strong written and oral communication skills necessary for professionally and coherently relating information pertaining to security activities and issues
Capable of interacting in a pleasant and tactful manner with contract security, event planners, vendors, law enforcement, and others as may be necessary for the completion of assigned duties
Possesses and maintains a professional attitude and appearance appropriate to the given work environment
Demonstrates high ethical standards and honesty and a professional demeanor
Demonstrates knowledge of modern security systems and equipment
Possesses basic computer skills necessary for analyzing and assessing information, writing reports, charting case progress, interdepartmental communication, and assuring records management and privacy
Ability to work various shifts as needed to meet operational needs
Ability to travel, both domestic and international, as needed to meet operational needs
Fluent in English, with additional language fluencies (especially Spanish, French or German) preferred

Qualifications:
Possess a high school diploma
Minimum of five years of experience appropriate for the knowledge and skill demanded by the position (e.g., law enforcement, emergency response, military or private security)
Background consistent with the ability to obtain a BSIS Proprietary Security Officer Registration and any other necessary licenses as required by the position
Background consistent with the ability to pass a TSA Security Threat Assessment
A valid “Class-C” California driver’s license
Must satisfactorily meet medical and physical requirements for Emergency Response responsibilities
