RTLA Natural Resource Technician / RTLA NRT 2016 – 181
Summary / Scope of Work
Candidate will administer the responsibilities of the Range and Training Land Assessment (RTLA) program at Fort Drum. The overall mission of the RTLA program is to collect and analyze natural resource information and to provide that information to those in command of the Army community, in support of preserving the military’s testing and training missions now and in the future. The RTLA program focus’ on developing and implementing effective monitoring strategies for assessing the success of land management decisions.
Job Duties
Includes, but not limited to:
• Monitor impacts of land use and military training activities on soils and vegetation.
• Conduct data collection.
• Implement a number of different vegetation sampling techniques in the field.
Specific Qualifications
• Demonstrated knowledge of ecology and plant taxonomy. Knowledge of the dendrology of the region and proficiency using dichotomous keys to identify plant species
• Experience in conducting forest inventory and/or vegetation sampling
• Demonstrated knowledge of vegetation sampling protocols
• Knowledge of the dendrology and taxonomy of regional flora and proficiency using dichotomous keys to identify plant species
• Experience with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and land navigation with a map and compass
• Ease with working under adverse field conditions (temperature, humidity, long hours in the field, insects, etc.)
• Capable of working as part of a two- or three-person team with limited supervision
• Ability to work and learn on the job
• Driver’s License and clean driving record
• Candidate should be in good physical condition
• Ability to traverse rough terrain carrying loads of up to 50 lbs.
• U.S. citizen
Desirables
• Experience in or on military installations
• Experience with plant taxonomy
• Interpersonal and people skills that promote excellent working relationships
• Ability to work cooperatively with military and civilian workforces
• Responsible for maintaining professional demeanor and attitude with military and civilian personnel
Minimum Level of Education
• BA/BS or enrolled in an accredited college or university in biology, ecology, natural resource management or other environmental related field.
• Other education, commensurate experience and demonstrated ability of individual may be substituted.
