Position: Summary:
The Gunsmith assists in the overall operation of the NTC Armory, assist with Armorer Certification Training and DOE Armorer Recertification. Daily responsibilities include general maintenance and repair, modification, alteration or development, issue and return, storage and security, and inventory of all weaponry, related equipment, and limited quantities of ammunition at the NTC. Assist with lesson plan development as necessary. Perform testing and evaluations of firearms, related equipment and report results.

Assist in the overall operation of the NTC Armory by following established procedures for the general maintenance and repair, issue and return, storage and security, and inventory of all weaponry, and related equipment.

Assists with classroom and or range instruction as necessary.

Make modifications, alterations or machine weapon parts or components as required.

Maintain accurate inventory of all weapons, and related equipment.

Issue and receive weapons, related equipment and maintains strict accountability.

Ensure all weapons and related equipment are clean, safe, functional and in good repair.

Conduct testing, evaluations and report results of firearms, accessories and other related equipment to provide
information to DOE sites.

Analyze consumption rates and trends and establishes stock levels for firearm-related items to support NTC training and exercise events.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge by studying/reviewing all relevant laws, regulations, orders, and policies; attending educational workshops; reviewing professional and technical publications; establishing and maintaining professional liaisons/networks with subject-matter experts; and participating in professional associations/affiliations.

Ensure that integrated safety management principles are applied to all duties. Perform all activities and tasks in a safe, ergonomically, and healthful manner.

Serve customers (external and internal) by focusing on quality as it relates to the customer; anticipating/understanding customer needs and expectations; responding expeditiously to customers questions, requests, and concerns; and satisfying reasonable customer needs and expectations.

Contribute to team effort by focusing on NTC mission, goals, and objectives. Accomplishing tasks and assignments in a professional and timely manner; keeping appropriate staff and management informed regarding the status of tasks and assignments; establishing and maintaining professional working relationships; working amicably, cooperatively, and productively with team members; assisting others as needed, and accomplishing other duties/tasks as assigned/directed or as necessity dictates.

Applies and follows basic safety and security concepts and policies.



Assists in the development, maintenance, and instruction of the armorer courses.

Degree in Gunsmith

Comply with all weapons safety requirements

Maintain accurate records of all maintenance performed and parts replaced on all firearms

Maintain factory certifications of all DOE weaponry

Basic computer knowledge

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of machine tools that includes milling machine and lathe

Knowledge of heat treating, and firearms refinishing

Knowledge of automated supply systems

Ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate DOE security clearance

Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate the work/training schedule

Ability to obtain DOE-NTC Certification as a DOE Armorer

Ability to lift 68 pounds

Ability to travel for training and other NTC business

Good customer relations skills.

The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.

During visits to areas of operations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
