Overview:
This position will be available upon contract award. The Explosive Detection Canine Handler will be a part of an EDC Team supporting a major carrier in the inspection of USPS mail cargo for transport via airline for National and International distribution. EDC Handler will be paired with a trained/certified NAPWDA canine and conduct daily inspection and acceptance of trucked mail services to prevent unauthorized introduction of explosive materials or matter.
Responsibilities:
Performs daily searches to prevent unauthorized introduction of explosive materials or matter.
In addition to operational duty, dedicates one hour to canine training each day; continuously reassess canine’s odor detection abilities and builds upon and/or refines its existing abilities.
Provides ongoing care, housing and food to assigned canine and arranges for veterinarian support, as needed (monthly canine care stipend provided); socializes and exercises canine following individualized health and wellness program based on its needs.
Maintains all operational records, including assigned canine training and health records.
Other duties, as assigned.
Must be able to work night and/or weekend shifts and overtime, if needed; on-call availability with a two-hour response time might be required; might travel up to 15%.
Qualifications:
Ability to exploit canine pack mentality in order to gain rapport, trust and bond. Clearly communicate and compassionately work with new canines.
Ability to effectively demonstrate training techniques (movements) visually and verbally.
Basic knowledge of explosive composition and vapor weights.
Experience/knowledge in proper handling of explosive compounds.
Ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders.
High School Diploma
Minimum of 2 years’ canine handling experience; Military Working Dog Handler or Federal, State, or Local Law Enforcement Canine Handler experience preferred
Requires NAPWDA certification prior to execution of duties and a re-certification on an annual basis.
Must be able to obtain a Secret clearance
