PRIMARY PURPOSE AND FUNCTIONS
Instructors are responsible for providing professional quality instruction to students, ensuring that each student in his/her class has a productive, challenging, and meaningful experience in the classroom or on the firing range. PSTA Instructors report directly to the PSTA Training Manager. The selected candidate will be a self-starter who has a strong work ethic and possess strong time management skills. He or she will understand, and represent, PSTA as a brand ambassador while meeting or exceeding client expectations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
PSTA Protective Services and Firearms Instructors conduct both classroom and range live-fire weapon instruction for new hire applicants (initial training) and current officers (in-service/refresher training) of client companies using standardized Programs of Instruction required for certification of Protective Service Officers. The primary responsibility of each Instructor is to:
Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students during all training activities they lead.
Administer and grade end-of-course tests and examinations.
Prepare and sign training documentation required for submission to third party agency certifiers, such as the Federal Protective Service, American Red Cross, etc.
Plan and coordinate firearms training.
Conduct all aspects of firearms qualification and re-qualification, including calling the course of fire during live fire exercises for FPS and DCJS qualifications.
Plan and coordinate all aspects of protective services training, including expandable baton, OC spray, handcuffing, defensive tactics, and security policies & procedures.
Ensure that all equipment, weapons, ammunition, and materials are on-hand for training.
Perform other administrative tasks as necessary to support training operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
PSTA Protective Services and Firearms Instructors must possess an extensive training background, with several mandatory instructor certifications, including the following credentials:
Completed or served at least three (3) years of experience in military, law enforcement, and/or federal protective services.
Possesses a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a firearms instructor on a full-time basis, in the federal government, in the military, in a law enforcement agency, or in the private sector with a reputable training organization.
Possesses a minimum of one (1) years of experience as a law enforcement or security services instructor on a full-time or part-time basis, with expandable baton, OC spray, defensive tactics, and handcuffing.
Must be a graduate of a recognized, reputable instructor training academy.
Can demonstrate extensive experience developing lesson plans for law enforcement, military, and/or security training courses.
Can demonstrate extensive experience training law enforcement, military, and/or security officers.
Can demonstrate practical knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Possesses a valid, current instructor certification in the following subjects:
Mandatory Firearms Instructor Certifications:
Registered DCJS General Instructor (13E) and Firearms Instructor (14E); or Certified NRA Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor
Additional firearms instructor certifications are a PLUS:
Maryland Qualified Handgun Instructor
Certified DC SOMB Firearms Instructor
Certified FLETC Firearms Instructor
DCJS PSS Instructor
DCJS Advanced Handgun Instructor
Other Mandatory Non-Lethal Certifications:
Certified First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor (American Red Cross)
Certified ASP or MEB Baton Instructor
Certified OC Spray Instructor
Certified Defensive Tactics Instructor
Certified National Weapon Detections Training Program (X-Ray) Instructor
