Duties & Responsibilities Summary:
Performs security management duties with minimal supervision to provide security for the staff, visitors and collections of the Harvard Art Museums. Assists the Director in supervising and coordinating the operations of the security staff. Requires substantial knowledge of museum operations, security staff operations, and security procedures. Is the first point of contact for emergency response. Work is performed with a high degree of skill and judgment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assists the Director in the coordination of operations, through the direct supervision of the security staff.
• Plans and prioritizes the daily workflow and may perform clerical and/or technical processing duties of a complex nature, such as payroll and time keeping.
• Provides day-to-day supervision of security staff by assuming responsibility for such tasks as: assigning work schedules, distributing and reviewing work, and providing orientation and ongoing training for employees.
• Participates in the performance management process for security department staff.
• Participates in the implementation of policies, and in the development of procedures and workflow governing the work of the unit.
• Assists in designing, developing and implementing new methods to improve the security of the Harvard Art Museums and improve the visitor experience.
• Uses Microsoft Office and security systems and programs to compose related correspondence, memoranda or other relevant department communication; including the creation and maintenance of statistical databases for information management and other tasks, including art protection system databases.
• Reviews video surveillance systems and contributes to reports to accompany investigations.
• Helps to plan and coordinates the security activities related to programs and events.
• Collaborates on project planning and implementation with other museums departments as assigned.
• Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications BA/BS or equivalent related work experience. Five or more years of progressively responsible security or directly-related other experience, which includes supervisory experience. Ability to patrol a multi-story museum and multiple sites. Ability to lift and use a fire extinguisher.
Additional Qualifications Some college education preferred. Experience working in cultural institutions (art museums preferred). Demonstrated working knowledge of specialized security systems, record management and security protocols, including complex security and fire/life safety systems. Overnight shift experience preferred. Strong analytical and communication skills, both oral and written. Must be self-motivated and perform efficiently with minimal or no direct supervision; possess initiative, decisiveness and sound judgment to make time-sensitive decisions. Demonstrated computer skills and experience with email and internet use. Demonstrated proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and database software packages. (Microsoft Office preferred.) Training in CPR and First Aid highly desirable (or ability to be trained). Must maintain a professional attitude and appearance. Must possess a problem-solving, customer service orientation.

Other duties consistent with the mission of the security department may be assigned as necessary. This position is non-union, and overtime eligible. Work schedule is determined by the needs of the museums and will include evening or weekend shifts.
