Background
United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) on behalf of UN Security Management System (UNSMS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of UNSMS in the country in order to enable the safest and most efficient conduct of UN AFP operations and activities as well as the safety and security of UN Personnel and their eligible dependants. Security Training Associate (STA) is a key element to support UNSMS in coordinating and conducting security related training and in analysing security information in order to ensure safety and security of UN personnel, property and operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Security Adviser (SA) in Nepal, the Security Training Associate (STA) assists coordinating and conducting the safety and security related training programme in the country and in analysing security information with a view to assist SA in reading early signals and warnings of evolving security situation that may impact safety and security of UN in Nepal.Summary of key functions:
Assist SA in design and formulation of UNDSS/Nepal safety and security programme within the area of responsibility.
Provides support in organizing and conducting training courses on safety and security awareness and preparedness to UN personnel, and providing security briefings to newly assigned personnel. Conducts other security briefings as and when required.
Assist SA for developing different safety and security training curriculum as per UN Security policy and guidelines.
Identifies sources of information related to security-driven issues. Identification and synthesis of best practices and lessons learnt directly linked to Security Management System (SMS) goals.
Liaises and coordinates, as appropriate, with the host government security organizations and/or personnel, including national and local provincial authorities, military, and police officers, as well as non-governmental organizations and other non-State actors in the area of operation.
Helps to assess the security situation at the duty station and ensures adequate gathering and verification of security information that may be required for a proper analysis of the situation by the SA.
Evaluation of the security impact. Monitoring and analysis of the security and political situation in the country and developing security measures and timely readjustments in security advisories.
Assist in development of guidelines, advisories and institutions that will address the safety and security of UN personnel and dependants problems.
Assist SA in coordination with agencies and host government security forces with critical incidents like arrest & detention, death & disability and other security incidents to UN personnel and dependants and preparation of reports for such incidents.
Provide technical assistance on safety and security matters as required on behalf of the SA.
Maintains regular contacts with Security Focal Points of UN AFP.
Managing incident database by capturing open security information for the country & regional level to analyze the situation and develop different types of comparative charts for the trend analysis reports.
Managing the database of the participants and the training conducted.
Performs any other tasks as assigned by the SA.

Experience in diplomatic security, protection and information analysis considered an asset
Required Skills and Experience
Education:
Completion of Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Social Science, Management or any other relevant field
Experience:
Minimum 5 years experience in safety & security, preferably in the field of training and security information analysis in the responsible position of military, police or other security related field of work. Prior experience with the UN system or an international NGO in safety and security is desirable.
Solid computers skills (MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint)
Ability to travel
Physically and mentally fit
Possession of a valid driver’s license
Language Requirements:
Fluency in English and Nepali languages, both in speaking and writing
